If the piercing equipments are not properly sterilized, then there may be transmission of some life-threatening diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, tetanus and HIV. To avoid this risk, you should go to a professional piercer and confirm that the equipments are sterilized.

Affecting the Function: Piercing in the genital area can affect their normal functions. It causes pain during urination process and sexual intercourse. If you don’t take proper care of genital piercing, it can cause infections and severe complications.

Risk from Swimming: This means going for swimming in rivers, lakes, oceans or streams during the healing period. It can increase the risk of protozoan and parasite infections.

Nerve Damage: If piercing is not carefully placed, then it can damage the nerve and make the surrounding tissues permanently dead. In case of oral piercing, there are chances of wearing of tooth enamel, chipped teeth and damage to the gums.

Keloid Formation: There may be formation of keloids, which are hard knots of scar tissues. They are developed at the base of a piercing. Excess scar tissues result from improper piercing, stretching the piercing and not cleansing it properly.

What is Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C, more commonly known as HCV is a viral infection of the liver. It is the most common liver disease worldwide. Also known as the ’silent epidemic’, Hepatitis C could have infected a patient for years before actually being discovered. HCV is one of the strains of the Hepatitis virus whose list goes from A through G.

The Hepatitis C virus attacks the liver. It keeps on multiplying, killing the surrounding tissue. The immune system fights back, usually causing reactions such as inflammation and fibrosis of the liver. If not detected and treated in time, it could lead to liver cancer or cirrhosis.

It is estimated that approximately 1.8 percent of the American population is infected by HCV which is a major cause of chronic liver diseases including liver cancer and cirrhosis. Almost 80 percent of those infected by HCV will develop chronic infection. Out of this approximately 20% will develop liver cirrhosis and 5% will develop liver cancer.

How is the Hepatitis C Transmitted
There are many ways in which the Hepatitis C virus can spread or be transmitted.

— The main route for the spread of the Hepatitis C virus is through blood.
— Blood transfusion with blood that is not screened for the Hepatitis C virus.
— Reuse of improperly sterilized needles.
— Reuse of the same needle by drug users.
— Improper sterilization when equipment is reused for ear piercing, nose piercing, body piercing, and circumcision.
— Improper sterilization of equipment used for dental procedures.
— Persons who have multiple sexual partners and have unprotected sex.
— Barbers using unsterilized shaving equipment and using the same blade on more than one person.
— Acupuncture using unsterilized needles.
— Sharing razors, nail clippers, nail files, and toothbrushes at home.
— Transmission from infected mother to newborn child (approximately 5 percent).

How to prevent being infected by the Hepatitis C Virus
There are certain precautions that one can take to avoid being infected by the Hepatitis C virus.

— Whenever a syringe is to be used on you, make sure that it is the disposable type and has never been used before.
— If you have to receive blood from a donor, always make sure that it has been screened for the Hepatitis C virus.
— Do not do drugs, but if you have to, make sure that you use your own needle. The safer way is to stop using drugs. Not only will it save you from the Hepatitis C virus, but a host of other viruses and social problems too.
— When having sex with an unknown partner always make sure that you are protected.
— Whenever you have your dentist put any foreign object into your mouth, make sure that it has been sterilized.
— Make sure that your barber sterilizes shaving equipment and changes the blade before being used on you.
— While undergoing acupuncture, make sure that the needles are well sterilized.
— Have your own personal razor, nail clipper, nail file, and toothbrush at home. Never share these with anyone.

How is the Hepatitis C Virus Not Transmitted
The Hepatitis C virus is not spread or transmitted by the following factors as is commonly perceived.

— Food
— Water
— Coughing
— Sneezing
— Casual contact
— Sharing eating utensils and drinking glasses

Precautions to Take Once Hepatitis C is Detected
Hepatitis C at times goes undetected for years, during which time it could have caused considerable liver damage. Once you are aware that you have the Hepatitis C virus you should take appropriate measures to protect your liver.

— Stop alcohol use immediately.
— Visit your physician for regular check-ups.
— Never take any medication on your own without the prior consent of your physician; not even over-the-counter medication.
— Ask your physician for the best diet so as to keep the load on the liver to a minimal.

Following all this may not rid the virus entirely, but will ensure that you live a better and healthier life.

Metal allergies are very common to most people who wear earrings, especially those with sensitive skin. Nickel and cobalt are among the most common problem makers, and they are found in just about all of the metal beads and findings in jewelry.

Copper and brass beads and findings often contain a very high concentration of cobalt and nickel.

Sterling silver is made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of other alloys, including copper and nickel. But be careful of many products you find that claim t be ’sterling silver’.

Gold is probably the least allergenic of the metals beaders often use, but it also has some trace of copper or silver in it. The higher the karat number, the less the amount of alloys, but if you’re extremely allergic to metal, you might want to be wary of this one, too.

SO WHAT TO DO?

Some suggestions:

Try painting three or more coats of clear nail polish on your metal findings and beads to keep the metal away from your skin! Do a test run before you put too much effort into the project to make sure this will work. Also this needs to be reapplied regularly.

Gold can be worn by some with a mild allergy. But it should be 14K or higher.

Surgical Steel. The term “Surgical” steel does not mean anything. It can be a very low grade of steel which can/will contain reactive metals. If you are considering steel for piercings it should be of “implant grade”. The most common metal that meets implant grade standards is
316-lvm stainless steel. It must meet all requirements of ASTM-F138 to be considered implant grade.

Consider nonreactive metals:
Titanium is the safest metal available for sensitive skin, especially for anyone allergic to nickel or silver. It is used for surgical implants and earrings are the same medical grade. Allergic reactions to titanium are almost unheard of.

These earrings are available in polished titanium, which looks like silver or platinum and also in anodised colours. Anodising is an electrochemical process which causes the surface of the metal to change colour, there are no other materials added and there is no plating or painting.

Whether as a means of personal expression, to designate societal standing, or as part of religious ritual, body piercing has been around almost as long as mankind.

Navel piercing: Although navel piercing is extremely popular today, in the ancient Egyptian civilization only the royal family was allowed to pierce their belly buttons - and anyone who broke this rule would be executed!

Nostril piercing: A passage from Genesis in the Bible’s Old Testament says, "…The man took out a gold nose ring…." Originating in the Middle East over 4,000 years ago, nostril piercing is still practiced by Bedouins today. Husbands present their wives with a ring at marriage, and the size of the ring denotes a family’s wealth. The practice traveled from the Middle East to India in the 17th century, where the type of jewel worn in the nose would designate social standing. Today, Indian women typically pierce their left nostril, in a spot associated with easing the pain of childbirth. Nostril piercing traveled to the West in the late 1960s, when young people searching for spiritual enlightenment in India returned home. Everyone from the Romans to the Tlingit tribe in Alaska viewed ear piercing as a sign of wealth and stature. Even sailors pierced their ears, in the belief that it gave them better eyesight.

Lip piercing: Historically, Aztecs and Mayan men underwent labret piercing and wore ornamental gold labrets to distinguish themselves as members in high social standing. Among some African tribes, lip piercing carried religious significance, while others perceived labrets as beautiful body adornment, and for still others, it was part of the rite of betrothal.

How to Avoid Body Piercing Infections

If you are thinking about getting your body pierced, especially for the first time, you should take the time to get informed before you get pierced. Because not knowing what to expect could be disastrous.

An Indiana teenager celebrated her 18th birthday by having her breasts pierced, but the piercing quickly turned into a disaster when a flesh-destroying infection forced doctors to remove her breast.

For her 18th birthday, Stephanie Edington of Crawfordsville, Indiana, decided to get her breasts pierced. She had the piercings done on August 29, and evidently had no problems at first. But within a few days the piercing in her left breast developed a flesh-destroying infection. Edington is diabetic, which left her susceptible to infection.

On October 14 Edington went to the hospital and by the time she arrived she was in critical condition. "By the time she got here, the skin tissue was all pretty much completely dead," said Dr. Robert Goulet, Jr., a professor at the Indiana University Cancer Center. "She was a very sick kid when she got here."

Doctors diagnosed Edington with necrotizing fascitis, or gas gangrene, a rare condition where bacteria grow rapidly and destroy living tissue quickly. Goulet said that the procedure used to pierce Edington’s breasts probably did not cause the infection, but the piercing created an entry point for the bacteria. Surgeons were forced to remove her left breast, and also removed lymph nodes and infected skin up to her collar bone.

Goulet told the Paper of Montgomery County that this is only the third case of gas gangrene in the breast area ever documented in the world. Edington remains hospitalized on an aggressive antibiotic regimen at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, where she has already undergone three surgeries and faces several more.

Edington’s mother, Pamela Osban, told reporters that she worries about her daughter’s future, and that the situation has taken a toll on their entire family. "You have no idea what it’s like to almost lose your daughter and then to make the decision to have one of her breasts removed," she said. "Some people say ‘It’s just a breast.’ They aren’t an 18-year old girl. It’s devastating for her and for the family."

Edington herself is eager to be discharged but nervous about what the future holds. "I would like to get out, but I am scared of what people are going to be thinking," she said.
